Who likes to train in the UK winter weather?
With the cycling racing season is now in full swing with Team Sky racking up their best start to a season so far and Mark Cavendish (Etixx-QuickStep) already with 5 wins, more that any other pro rider this year with races in Australia, South America and the Middle East.
A tough day in the saddle with 3 ascents and descents of Cragg Vale the longest continuous climb in the UK, clinic I left my home at 8am and stayed low in Airedale valley to meet Ben Wood in Keighley, the Garmin was hovering around -5oc with wind chill and the finger ends numbed. A steady climb up through Oxenhope and over the tops and down into Hebden Bridge, the descent was sketchy with ice patches and slippery road surfaces in places. So onto Cragg Vale, something I had only been told about from cycling mates an awesome climb and one that would provide simulation for Ventoux. For me this was a recce to set out a plan to ride this regularly during the build to up Race to Space, with an increasing amount of ascents as our schedule builds towards our July target date.
This was a really clear day as we approached Cowling Pinnacle, seek this was to be our first Ultra6 Race to Space group filming session with use of a video drone and a long road ascent to the top to create some amazing images and film. But of course as ever the Yorkshire winter brought with it freezing snowy conditions with ice patches that froze the team to their bones.
Ben Wood, price Nicky Jovanovic and Andy North went out to climb a local hill with a bad reputation ‘MURDER MILE’, this was Ben’s childhood riding days re lived and it sure was murder after 5 ascents and descents of the hill with legs on fire and weakening with every turn of the crank, Ben and Nicky set of fast and hard whilst Andy took and rest and filmed the lads racing each other in sections.
We want to continue the Ultra6 brand to help promote health and wellbeing around the Yorkshire area and to encourage people to get fit and to get outdoors with the aim of helping people to discover for themselves what added motivation an improved level of fitness can give.
DESPITE battling against sweltering conditions , troche a Yorkshire team running and cycling in aid of our Armed Forces heroes, doctor has crossed the finishing line in Scotland to set a new world record time.
The Ultra 6 Great Britain challenge team, spearheaded by Leeds’s Andy North, has completed their Land’s End to John O’Groats DAILY 100 mile cycle AND marathon effort.
Three of the team – Andy North, Mick Bowden and Ben Wood – finally crossed the line at 10pm on Saturday night (July 20) at John O’Groats to set a provisional world record time of 6 days, 16hrs 30mins.
They were aided on route by Cpl Andy Reid, formerly of 3 Yorks, who lost three limbs in an explosion in Afghanistan.
Dozens of well-wishers joined them or waved them on their marathon route from Land’s End to John O’Groats.
Despite repeatedly running and cycling in temperatures exceeding 30 degrees C, the team has still managed to achieve its goal.
Wow so this is the Ultra6 Website, finally feels like the challenge is upon us and it’s already picking up speed and momentum. Myself (Ben Wood) and Andy North have been dreaming up this challenge for the last couple of years. At first myself and Andy North were asking each other is this challenges possible? I replied to Andy “yeah i reckon, anythings possible”
I’ve always believed that anything is possible if you put your mind to it. Sounds cheesy i know, but sometimes you have to dream big. This challenge is big alright. It’s possibly the biggest thing i have ever been involved in. It’s scary, but exciting, inspiring and nerve racking all rolled in to one.
Will we make it?…. will I make it?…. what if?
