Andy ‘Touché’ North
Nick name for the challenge and why?
Touché Turtle is always up for a challenge! He might be last, but will hopefully get there in the end… ‘TOUCHE AWAY’
Why are you doing this challenge?
To motivate others to have a go and reach beyond what they think is possible. I have always been fascinated and excited about space travel, and I love the French mountains and the history of the Tour de France, so this seams like an obvious combination. The original idea of cycling to Everest was suggested and I immediately visualized x 3 Everest and saw the mountain top peeking out of the Earth’s atmosphere.
How long have you been cycling?
Since starting Ultra6 challenges in 2010, when we ran and cycled Lands End to John O’Groats. This was my first time on a bike since the age of 10, so I guess that is a gap of 40 years…
What are your strengths on the bike?
Nothing really, I just love that feeling of setting off for a bike ride.
What is / are your key achievements in cycling / sport?
As a youngster I enjoyed all sports, but with no major achievements. I’m now creating new records in combination cycling and running endurance with Ultra6.
What fears / challenges do you think you will have to overcome on the mountain to achieve the Race to Space?
So long as the preparations are successfully completed then it is just you against the mountain. The weather will control the journey, but as a team we are strong.
